Decorating a Small Space

Decorating a small space with lots of texture, live plants and tons of gardening ideas for starting seeds indoors and making gardening plans. Because decorating it around a vacuum cleaner would be ridiculous.

Wouldn't it? Especially if you treated yourself and your home to a robot vacuum and the best place to put it was your entryway. Smack dab center of your home.

So, to counteract my lunacy of having a vacuum in my foyer, I decided to decorate this tiny space with what was on my mind; seed and flower catalogs.

After the holiday decor was taken down, the catalogs started showing up, so I incorporated them into my decor for fun. This area was ripe for some color and texture to warm it up. This area is only about 60 square feet, so keeping things minimal helps makes the space feel bigger. The hutch is 8" deep, but gives me huge impact with it's rustic pine wood.

Using the same hutch we built back in 2018 and a bench we've had just as long, I try to spruce things up with a different look without spending too much money. Breaking down exactly how much I spent is easy. I spent twelve dollars on the rattan/grapevine carrots. Everything else I already had or it has another purpose.

The seed packets are real and I will be starting some flowers in a month or so. The grapevine that is wound around the top of my hutch was used on a christmas tree and I didn't put it all away. Something just told me to leave a small amount out, so I did.

I rolled up some flower magazines, put some bulbs in a lantern. This small area always needs a big punch for me, because you can see it from the Living Area.

I am always trying to challenge myself to redefine things to decorate with. That way it brings a small element of surprise or drama to things.

Since this is technically a hallway / entryway I love that the hutch maximizes the height of my ceilings and draws your eye up. Plus gives me tons of storage that my guests can use for keys or hats and I can pop in some of my style in with the function of a room.

I moved some plants into this area, a Lemon Cypress that used to live by my kitchen sink now gets a new view plus some English Ivy.

I'll keep any eye on them and see how they do.

I purposely left this space bare for a couple of weeks after the holidays for the purpose of letting my mind adjust to a different perspective. I didn't want to be the first blogger to add Spring touches to her home. That's not me, or what I am about. I wanted to add a timeless look that couldn't be categorized to a specific season. I want to try and get out of that trap. The pressure that if I don't update my space and blog about it with Spring touches, people will lose interest.

I think if you pick your favorite licensed Interior Designer and pick apart what they do and how they do it, you'll notice they don't add too many seasonal changes to rooms when they decorate. Except for Christmas, it generally is year round for them, except for updates of a new pillow or two.

It's more about the color or feeling you want to evoke. How they use color and wood tones.

It's about those scavenged pieces you find when you're out Antiquing. Or that piece you find when you least expect it.

We've have been doing some DIY next to the front door, so stay tuned for that. We took the old tile out after the holidays and laid down some more red oak flooring in a different pattern. I got it stained yesterday and am hoping to get some poly on it on Monday.

Have a good day!
