Spring Garden Tour 2020

Spring garden tour that showcases some gorgeous seasonal color using tulips, phlox and purple foliage.

Let's take a stroll through the front yard right after a heavy rain to see all the gorgeous color. The Tulips are blooming, the drumstick alliums are budding up and even some of the ground cover phlox is blooming.

After seeing some of these pictures and not having to edit them with the exception of making them smaller, I have changed my mind about sunlight being the best to photograph in.

A cloudy day rocks when shooting pictures.

The lambs ear, penstemon and alliums are sprouting up beautifully. So beautiful in fact, things have multiplied and I even have a lot more volunteers of the lambs ear in other parts of this bed.

Below, you'll notice a big change if you've been a follower for a couple of years. I relocated the 3 mini Bobo Hydrangea's to the backyard. They looked great here on this corner but I was having some serious issues with weeds with tap roots.

They had gotten in right up against the trunks of the hydrangeas and nothing was working in getting rid of them. Last Spring I even tried cutting the largest weed down to the ground, and trying to smother it with a metal soup can.

I left it there for over a year. No dice, it didn't work. I yanked everything out and scoured the Hydrangeas root systems for all the stragglers that have been given me some serious grief for 5 years and tossed them like I was throwing out the first pitch for the Chicago Cubs.

In there place I planted 3 pugster dark purple butterfly bushes and 4 Hakanachloe type grasses right behind them.

Remember last year when I planted 4 more poppies in the hopes of my lone poppy having friends?

No luck there either. But ironically enough in one of the darkest spots of my yard I may have a volunteer. I will let you know if I am right or it's just a weed impersonating a poppy.

The side yard was a surprise this year. I forgot I had planted Tulips on the west side last Fall.

The Ivory Halo Dogwoods leafing out, give me way too much enjoyment for some reason. It feels like a sickness at this point. Especially after the alliums bloom little purple balls of color.

Hi Christine,

I'm with you, I find cloudy days are better for pictures. Even indoors with our home.

Your spring garden is pretty, love the color of your tulips. I know you love your garden.

Your garden is lovely in every way! The photo of the tulip with the raindrops is so lovely. Yes, cloudy days are much better for photography!

Christine, it's all looking so good. I love seeing the changes from year to year, and each and every little growth. I get the excitement, totally. And I agree about cloudy days being great for photographing the garden vs harsh sunlight. Poppies were a challenge for me too, at least from seed. I ended up transplanting from my sister's gardens to get mine started. I transplanted mine to my daughter's, but they didn't sprout this yr. Looks like I'll be robbing my sister's garden again.

Such a pretty spring garden, Christine!!! I love all the tulips... <3 I planted the bulbs I had in pots last year out in front of our new home after we moved in (mid-march) but they never came up. I think the local moles got them. I see you have a large rabbit with a lantern! Charles bought me the very same rabbit and he is adorable!! I need to pull him out for summer so his little lantern can shine every evening.

Thank you for sharing your lovely yard,
Barb :)
